Yaks thrive in ice age conditions, from Kashmir to Mongolia in the Central Asian highlands. Wild yaks are 6-7 feet tall at the shoulder and may weigh a ton. Domestic yaks are much smaller. They have hair in two layers, like many arctic animals. The inner layer of down can be combed out once per year, yielding a very small amount per animal. The yarn we offer here was spun for us from 100% pure yak down by one of Italy's most renowned cashmere spinners, a company that we have worked with for over ten years. The yarn is plied from two threads, one in a natural undyed brown hair, and the other in natural unbleached white. We believe it is the only yarn of this type available.
